Think of the first three months of your baby's life as "the fourth trimester." They are adjusting to life outside of the womb as they were consisently content before. Now, the littlest thing startles them, even an arm reflex can scare them enough to cry. I would suggest tightly swaddling, in just a diaper, overnight. The snugness will recreate the feeling of the womb which just may increase sleep. I started doing this consistently at two months (also keep your baby's room dark) and my baby slept through the night for 10 - 12 hours! She's now 12 months and still sleeps that long. Just start a routine with your son and stick to it! Good Luck!

That's completely normal. There's no way a 2-month-old baby will sleep all the way through the night. Start a bedtime routine. If you want to put your baby down at 8, give him a bath, put him in PJs, and read him a book, and then put him to bed at 8.

I've just started a nighttime routine with my 2 month old baby. It's hard, but eventually it'll help him understand that it's nighttime, and he needs to sleep his longest time at night and not during the day. After a while, you'll notice that your baby will sleep longer at night. But at 2 months, it's still way too early for a baby to be sleeping through the night. That's because your baby still needs to be getting fed every 3-4 hours. Until about 4 months of age, you're going to have to be on his schedule more than anything. That's just the way it works with a newborn!

And whatever you do, do NOT add rice cereal to breastmilk or formula. This is dangerous at any time before 4 months of age because it can cause your baby to develop allergies. At this age, all you need to be giving your baby is formula or breastmilk. There's no clinical proof that rice cereal helps a baby to sleep longer. It's another wive's tale.

A two month old will rarely sleep thru the nite. And when they do, 5-6 hours is considered "thru the nite." It seemed all my kids had to weigh about 12 lbs or so before the nighttime feedings and wakings dropped off. Also, never put extra garments or blankets in bed with a baby. The risk of SIDS is too great.

Sorry but you have a month or two to go before you can expect him to sleep all night. His stomach just isn't big enough to hold enough food to keep him full. I have read that babies need to be 15 pounds or more before they will sleep more than 4 hours at a time.

I disagree about the rice cereal in the bottle. We started my daughter on that at 3 months and she did great with it. My pediatrician said it was fine as long as we put no more than 1 tablespoon of cereal per 2 ounces of formula/breastmilk. The reason rice cereal is introduced first is that almost nobody is allergic to rice.

Feed him a little rice cereal thinned out with formula or breast milk at his 8 or 12 feeding. This will fill his tummy up more and may help him to sleep longer through the night.

Kelly, your little one will turn around. They are just a little confused. Mine started sleeping at night at about 3 months.

Let him sleep with one of your garments. One that you have worn, not washed. Choose something that you may have to do without. You may not get it back.
