I did the ghost tour there a few months ago, and although the guide scared the pants out of the group at the end of the tour, I found the whole concept fascinating. Whats the story behind the misogynistic violent poltergeist down there? Who was he supposed to be? What other history can anyone tell me of the Vaults?
No sarky comments please - I just want to know the history of it all.

No, it was the South Bridge Vaults I visited. Although any other ghost stories are fascinating, must admit. Might have to go to "Annies Room" next time I visit. Anywhere else worth seeing??

You're referring to the spirit known as "Mr Boots", which is a nickname for the the nastiest spirit in the Blair Street vaults. Unfortunately, nothing much is known of him or his history. Before South Bridge was built, the vaults had tenants - people actually living there, going to work and coming back, raising a family. Though at that time surely it was better lit and all. The ghosts that haunt the vaults, are believed to be past tenants - apart from Mr Boots there have been sightings of a young girl, a lady, a boy and a dog. That's a complete family then. Mr Boots has not harmed many a tourist, but he does scare off the other ghosts and likes to frighten visitors too. How much of it's true, how much of it is thought up by ghost tour guides, we'll never know.
Others on here are referring to a witches coven in the vaults. Contrary to popular belief though, these are 'white' witches. They're there because beneath all the buildings and the strong magneticism of the place, they feel more in touch with the spirit world they're trying to connect to.
The MacKenzie ghost is the scariest character in all Edinburgh ghost stories, but he dwells at the 'covenanters prison', part of Greyfriars churchyard on the corner of Lothian Road and Princes Street. Though this patch is in the open air, rather than hundreds of meters below the streets of Edinburgh.. It's scarier still. A homeless person reportedly woke the spirit of a sadist executioner, when he slept in his tomb and inadvertedly dropped his urn. This happened in the mid-nineties. Ever since, people venturing there have come back scratched, hurt, sick and scared out of their wits. Whether you believe in that stuff or not, if you cross Princes Street and cast a glance through the gates, you'll notice it's a nasty place despite how pretty it looks.

the old classic tour to do is the 'mary kings close' tour. it's the most famous tour in edinburgh i would say. there are stories all over the web about it if you would like to research it. there are also looooooots of ghost tours through various parts of the city, and 'witchery' tours. you may enjoy this site http://www.ghostevents.co.uk/
