there was some advice on this in moneysavingexpert's column a few weeks ago (in the guardian newspaper)
he said that you can unlock your phone for free, and then use the sim of the country you are in.
there are also a few worldwide sims, I think some of them are available from Isle of Man providers.

Get yourself a local PAYG SIM card. Often you'll find that people who are just leaving an area to travel onwards might be willing to sell you theirs cheaply - that's what happened a lot when I was travelling in France. Though O2 are offering good deals on holiday calls at the moment.

The cheapest route is to get a sim free phone so it can use any network. This way you can use a sim card from the country you are in, which will be cheaper than any UK network rates.

Buy a travel pack from a networks shop, have a look around and find the prices etc and compare them.

I've just bought "Global Premium Mobile Service" from STA for my son. It's free to him because I'm paying. I don't know how it compares but I feel it may be as good as you'll get.
