I just saw the film the other day starring William Hurt and Charlotte Gainsbourg. I thought the whole story was really good though I know what you mean about the ending, it was an anticlimax. There needed to be a lot more angst and passionate dialogue between the two.

Well I like the ending, because at the end of the day Jane Eyre is a romance, and we all know that romances have to have happy endings!

I'm glad you asked. I love the book hate the ending. Irritating is the only word i can find to describe it. Why couldn't it have just ended with everyone miserable and alone? Too many books strive for a happy ending, i don't see the point. It is like she could think of no other way to bring the story to a conclusion.

If you don't like the ending but love the book, try reading the Eyre Affair by Jasper Fford. It's really funny and explores alternative endings

Dear reader, it ties it up a little too well for me. The first wife had to die, pleasing the puritans, the mansion had to go, pleasing the snobs and the dashing leading man had to go blind in order to stand living with a plain governess. I know the last bit isn't strictly speaking true. I love the book and the first unattractive leading lady but much prefer Wuthering Heights.

Not particulary, although I think Bronte left it for the reader to find their own ending in their own imagination. Saying that, it is one of my favourites books ever.

Not very satisfying, but the book wouldn't have been very good if it ended any other way.
