In normal health, the body regulates its pH levels through several mechanisms. The most obvious is breathing - we excrete carbon dioxide from all our cells and this is transported in the blood to be released at the lungs. Carbon dioxide dissolves in the blood and forms carbonic acid. This would raise pH above tolerable levels of just above neutral and therefore it binds to bicarbonate ions that neutralise this effect.
Stomach acid is pH 1-2 to begin the breakdown of protein food particles and to destroy pathogens that are in food. It can be raised by taking an antacid, but for what purpose unless you have heartburn/ulcer. This rise only triggers the stomach to produce more hydrochloric acid.
Dietry intake may cause increased acidity in the stomach but this will be homeostatically regulated and once it passes out the stomach, bicarbonate floods in to neutralise.
Why would u want to reduce pH (ie increase acidity) and be at risk from acidosis?
