The emo trend started in the early nineties and is often described as a synthesis of the punk and goth movements. Emo is an abbreviation of "emotive". Emo music tends to be highly emotional and dramatic, and the general mindset of the culture tends toward melancholy and angst. Styles of dress tend toward baggy clothing in dark, neutral colors, layers (like the grunge movement), and hairstyles that would have once been considered "punk". The term "emo kid" is often used in a derogatory sense to describe a teenager who is emotionally unstable, or who intentionally dramatizes his or her life to make it seem more interesting.

"Preppy" is a generic term that has been around for long time. It is used to describe a person who dresses and acts in a typically conservative fashion (as someone attending a preparatory school would be expected to do). "Preps" are characterized as being wealthy, affluent, popular, and satisfied with the status quo. The term is almost always used in a derogatory sense, indicating obsession with external appearance, popularity, and other superficial concerns.

"Emo" is a term used to describe someone who normally wears dark/black clothing, form fitting shirts, tight, even girl jeans on guys. Usually has facial piercings and long hair that covers their eyes. Also "emo" can be someone who has black thick rimmed glasses with the same form fitting attire. "Preppy" is used to commonly describe people who dress nicely. Polo shirts specifically, jeans, nice watch perhaps, necklace. Usually a jock.

It's just the cool thing these days. Emo has replaced "punk". Hopefully it'll all end soon and people can get off the trendy bandwagon.
