Also do they always follow the darker parents colouring? ie. blue and brown so baby will be brown?

My baby has blue at the moment and is still v young and I have blue, my husband has brown and someone said she cannot be his because they would be brown which is rubbish because a) I think I might have noticed if I'd slept with someone else!! and b) my niece had blue initially and now they are brown. All babies have blue eyes at the start don't they if they are caucausian?

Most babies have their final eye color by age 6 months, and the vast majority have changed by the first birthday. But there are exceptions. And some eyes can even change color (between related colors--like blue and gray) in young adulthood.

Most babies are born with blue eyes. But in terms of eyes, gray is a shade of blue. So some babies are born with gray eyes. And babies *don't* always have the darker of the colors of the two parents. It is more complicated than that.

Each person has 2 genes for (primary) eye color--blue or brown. A child gets one of each of her/his parents' genes. Someone with 2 blue genes will have blue eyes. Someone with 1 or 2 brown genes will have brown eyes. So if you have blue eyes, you have 2 blue-eyed genes, and all of your children will get a blue gene from you. Your husband has brown eyes, but he *may* also have a blue-eyed gene. If he does, then each of your children has a 50% chance of having blue eyes and 50% of having brown eyes. If, however, he has 2 brown genes, all your children will have brown eyes. If one of his parents has blue or green eyes, then he definitely has the recessive gene for blue eyes; otherwise, there's no way to know.

Green eyes are the result of a second gene *if* the primary gene is for blue eyes. (This second gene does nothing if the primary gene says "brown eyes".) Specific shades of any color are much more complicated.

The blue baby eyes (if they later change to brown) doesn't "count" in this; the genetic color is the one that the child has once her/his eyes have their final color.

I know from my own experiences. My daughter had blue eyes up until she was 4. They have now went a deep green. My son on the other hand stayed blue until he was about 2. They are green as well now. I have heard in the past that by the time they are 2 years old they should have the eye colour they will indeed have. But in my daughters case this didn't happen. My eyes are a hazel green and my husbands are a blue/grey. Usually, in most cases brown overpowers any other colour. That doesn't mean that your child will have brown eyes, but it will be highly likely. Yes, almost all babies are born with blues eyes. Some will change within days, others it could be years. Anyhow I'm sure your baby has beautiful eyes, no matter what colour they are.
Oh, and no they don't always take after the parents, I have seen some cases where both parents are different from the child.

BTW, some of you people need to reread what was written. She didn't say her husband was doubtful, she said "someone said the baby could'nt be her husbands because of the eye colour. Not that her husband thought she was cheating. Geez!!

All babies have blue eyes to begin with then they change over a few weeks. Some, however, have darker blue than others and these will be the ones that change to brown.

Both my babies' eyes started blue but have changed to brown (like mine) but my husband's first child has his grandmother's blue eyes, rather than my hubby's light blue or the child's mother's brown. Genetics is complex, but the brown gene is dominant.

I am caucasian and my husband is East Indian. Our twin daughters who are 18 months old STILL have blue eyes, and they probably won't change. It doesn't matter what people say is the dominant colour, there are always exeptions to every rule!

My friend's son eyes finally settled on their permanent colour, at age 4. It all depends on the child. Most people say by 1 year of age the colour is determined, but again that rule is not hard and fast. Enjoy your baby!

Generally, it'll be a few months before their eyes will change colour. Most Caucasian babies are born with dark blue eyes, and, i don't think eye colour does always follow the parents colouring, because my brother has brown eyes, yet my mum has green, and my dad has grey. Also, I have hazel eyes, but they're kind of marbled green and brown, which doesn't really fit very well with my parents...hope this helps!

Well, it is true that brown eyes are a dominant trait. But, there is still the possibility that your baby could keep her blue eyes. There is a 1 in 4 chance that she will keep that recessive trait. Babies eye color usually changes before 9 months of age. If they don't change after that, then they most likely will not. And lastly, eye color is the last thing that I would look for in determining whether or not someone was the father of my baby. Whoever told you that is a moron...

My pediatrician said he has had babies change eye color as late at 5 years of age. He said there is no hard and fast rule for this. My son is 10 1/2 months old and still has the beautiful light blue eyes he was born with.

The colour tends to settle between 6 months and one year. No not all caucasian babies have blue eyes to start. My baby has always had brown eyes the same as me although her Daddy has bright blue eyes.
