since all the emotions in our body are caused by hormones and other chemicals secreted by our bodies in response to a range of sensory observations, could we not mimic these in artificial intelligence?

Emotions are not caused by hormones as such. Hormones can change the mood, but emotion does need some sort of trigger, which will cause the release of hormone. Take adrenalin, for instance. It is released when one if confronted with danger, but fear had to come first.

That said, I am sure that a robot with "emotions" and software equivalence of hormone will be attempted eventually, but we are still quite far from it. Best current artificial intelligence systems have the brain power of an insect these days.

And in the end, someone may ask "why?" One of the best thing about robot will be their capability of reacting rationally, and to not be driven by 'emotions', which can cloud judgment. So unless you would want ot make a robot psychologist, or a robot psychology patient to study emontional response, the desirability of emotion in a robot is presently quite low. This could change in the future, when the complexity of a simulated emotional response system becomes possible.

The complexity and the range of human emotions is too vast to reproduce realistically in a robot. The sensitivity and balance of our bodies would take an infinity of calculation and processing and I still think it could not be done. To influence the robots' cells with these hormones, they would have to be made of the same materials as ours are, so it wouldn't be long before the Dr Frankensteins got onto using foetuses for their materials. (Some already are of course!) What a waste of effort (not to mention the immorality of it!) when we could be more excitingly employed in developing our own massive potential.
We are so manipulated by the money-makers, that what we are being offered is not what is good for us as a species but whatever makes money for them, robots are among that class of things. Many of us are fascinated by gadgets, but if we tapped into our innate possibilities we would have much richer lives and the human race would have a better chance of survival!
