You emphasized on the word "test" and rightly so.
Test cricket is named so because it is the most perfect way for a team to show their cricket skills, so this is a real "test" of their abilities in all fields of cricket like balling, batting and fielding. And not only that it is also a "test" of the mental toughness of the captain.
So "test" match is infact a real game...

I assume because cricket matches go on for different lengths.
Club games are usually a day or two.
Represetive games are 3-4 days.
And International cricket 'tests' are 5 days. A full 5 day game is the ultimate 'test' of ones ability and character

According to hubby it is more important than a game it is a test. He tells me the highest level of rugby and cricket is called a test match.

cricket is a game.
it has 2 components - test and ODI
a cricket match can be a test match which is 4-5 days long or a cricket match can be an ODI match( one day international) which is only for 1 day.
so cricket is a game, a test is a kind of match.

why is a soccer game called a MATCH...when its not exactly a match between the 2 teams playing......there is no harm calling crickt matches a test match..bcause its a real test of players' class, skills, techniques and patience

IN EARLY DAYS CRICKET RATED AS THE TESTING SKILLS OF TWO NATIONS.
BATTING, BOWLING, FIELDING SKILLS DISPLAYED FOR 5 POSSIBLE DAYS.
NO OTHER GAME LASTS SUCH A LONG DURATION.
THAT MAY BE THE REASON I THINK.
