My favorite one was a massive den I dug with my friend in snow. We were about 11 and on skiing holidays. There were so much snow that the trees looked like bushes. We worked on our cave for days, coming back soaking wet, exhausted and happy. The den was few meters long and big enough for 2 kids.
Wolf nature must have been calling me then already;)

We used to play by a pumping station. When I think of it now this was a recipe for disaster as there was open running water and slippery spongy ground. The coolest thing about this place was this huge piece of pipe down by the stream. We used this to make a little camp. We had straw for seating and would hang out in there. It had a great echo. My friend Jennifer and her brother Richard had "discovered" this place so they pretty much made the rules(such as they were). The whole river system around our city flowed around this area and most of the land was marsh. Years before my Dad had fished for eels down there.
The place was even cool when we got a little older, I remember going there to pout when I was about 14 or 15 and little miss super moody. It was also a pretty good place to go with a member of the opposite sex. Necking amongst the rats was kinda fun.
They've cleaned it up now, landscaped and hauled away all the junk. The stream that went into the pumping station is underground ,the marshes have a highway across them. The station itself is a "national treasure" though and cannot be torn down.

lol I was a bit more of an "urban architect" - rather than drag all my fun stuff into a place of solitude, make a den and then sit in it having adventures, I'd basically pile a bunch of stuff against my bedroom door and locked myself in. That one room was a Tardis, a million alien planets, a reading room, a writing room, the web-slung Manhattan skyline, a dancefloor where I perfected my "Skakin' Stevens broken ankles" and my imaginary friend's only safe hiding place.

Yeah, We use to make dens in the bushes around fields. It was great fun until the farmer chased us out!

I would make dens out of the couch cushions. But I think you are talking about forts

I don't know what a den is. I'm from the military obsessed United States. All we have are "forts".

Fantastic and nostalgic question

I grew up in the armed forces (my father was in the RAF) so lived in RAF bases all round Europe (but mostly England)

we used to have old world war II bunkers everywhere that we used as dens..there was loads of them and us kids were all in tribes...we protected our own bunkers and tried to ransack other kid's...

Heady days, thanks for making me remember this!!

I made a tank out of fire wood drew up all the controls. It was very cool. I worked on it for weeks and weeks perfecting it. It was one way to get me to do the wood splitting and stacking. It really was cool it had all these control panels I'd drawn up and radars. A flip up visor and climb up drop down entrance. My finest childhood creation.
