You need More than just AVG.
You also need Anti-spyware protection.
(Caution, you can only run one anti-virus program at a time, other wise I would recommend more than one so one could catch what the other might miss.)
You can run 2 anti-spyware. Nothing catches 100% because new Malware comes out DAILY and it takes a while for the programmers to write protection updates.
There is really not much difference except a virus can be very small and written to only cause harm.
A Trojan-virus is written to open and "call home" and download more Malware.
Spyware is a program written to follow your computer activity and can get your passwords and other personal information.
Keyloggers also do this by Watching the keyboard and keeping track of every keystroke, getting your credit card and other password and vital information. this file of data is sent to the "Bad guy" automatically by the keylogger program.
I hope you can see that no matter how secure your connection to your bank, or anyone, a program like a keylogger gets it's information DIRECTLY from your keyboard.
Adware is just spyware that's used to send you those annoying pop up advertisements. Get too many of those and your screen becomes almost useless with you spending ALL your time trying to close all the pop ups.
I use all of the following Free software with Windows XP SP2 and Internet Explorer with MSN toolbar and the pop-up blocker turned on and have never had a single problem with my computer sense Microsoft came out with SP2. (knock on wood.) (And be sure to keep Windows and the following software Updated)
The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)http://www.grisoft.com/doc/289/lng/us/tpl/tpl01
The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html)<--English version
AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.
These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.
The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)
for further information on computer safety.

I highly recommend checking out the latest edition of Consumer Reports. They did a test of the major and some free antiviruses and antispy software and rated them all. Might not be a bad place to start looking.

You need both. AVG blocks viruses, which invade through network ports (worms), emails, and infected files. Does not block spyware, which comes from web sites and downloads
Get Ad-aware (free from Lavasoft.com) and run it regularly. Also Defender from microsoft.com (free) to help guard against future infections.
