Living organisms changed the earth, eg, before there was life on this planet, there was no free oxygen in the atmosphere, no good for sustaining most life as we know it today! When photosynthesizing bacteria appeared, the caused the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to become 'locked up', in the bodies of organisms, and dead organisms...and released oxygen into the atmosphere, making the earth suitable for plant and animal life.

The world wasn't designed at all. It obviously does sustain life, because life covers the planet. Life evolved to suit the earth.
