i'm going to be on my 3rd year of college and have to choose a major. i was wondering if anyone that has any experience with accounting or in general business administration can tell me the base starting pay and if it's a hard degree to achieve. can anyone please tell me more about accounting in general in this business world? like if it's a really competitive job or it's not needed, etc? thanks a lot... i really need some guidance because my school's advisers are all lazy. they just gave me a piece of paper of what classes to take and that's it. they don't want to meet up with me to sit down and talk about the details. so i would appreciate it if anybody here can help me out... thank you!

I have a degree in accounting and finance and the pay is decent, but offers potential after a while if you can get a CPA and prove your worth. You must enjoy accounting though as some consider it boring and you will be sitting down looking at a computer most of the day. Accounting does provide many options, such as taxes, auditing, bookkeeping, etc. and all businesses need accountants so there are always jobs out there. Depending on the area you live in and type of job, a starting salary is usually between $30 - $45k. In the past few years, due to government regulations in accounting, there has been a high demand for accountants. So, while as many consider accounting to being boring and tedious, there are lots of opportunities and more stability than many other careers.

A BA in Business is about as useful as a Liberal Arts degree. The main use is that some employers only want to hire college graduates. I have a BS in Operations Management. No one was ever able to show me the difference between the BS and the BA. My degree helped me to get a job as an insurance claims adjuster. Wages are relatively low, not too many job opportunities, and the work is very hard. You have to deal with greedy people all day.
Accounting is a very useful degree. Every business of every type in the United States needs accounting work done. The pay is relatively good. There are lots of job openings. You can specialize: taxes, finances, forensics.
The major drawback to accounting, for me, is that it is so boring.

I did Business at college. I also did accounting as a separate course. I found it really useful when I got a job because it makes you more flexible in the workplace.
Accounting is better paid over here in the UK if you are qualified to a high level.

definitely. you have an edge over the other graduates of business admin if you major in accounting. it is easier to get a job if one has an acctg background. acctg job is not limited to only one field of business. accounting knowledge is needed and valued in all kinds of jobs, be it in a big company or a small one. in your personal business, acctg knowledge will come handy. you are not limited to being an acctg clerk or acctg assistant all your life. you can also go up the ladder of success if you prove your worth as a good accountant. the pay is good and the reward is enriching. you only have to sacrifice a few years of studies but you have a lifetime to enjoy the fruits of your studies and sacrifices.
so go, get an accounting for a major subject.

Lose accounting - its boring and tedious, as well as a surefire way to get a whopper of a midlife crisis later on, and you'll abandon your wife and kids and marry some stupid receptionist. cliche's come true man.. anyways good luck.
