One aspect I think she leaves out is the whole concept of brand building. The brand of a business includes all the perceptions of quality, desirability, social status, corporate social responsibility and other impressions that a consumer might reflect upon when deciding when to make a purchase. Every company will have a brand perception no matter what they do, but most companies will try to influence this with their marketing.
For instance, when people choose which car to buy, they are probably making a choice that is part practical and logical, and part emotional. They may choose a car that conveys something about themselves (or something that they wish were true about themselves).
Marketing can help influence perceptions people have about a product, and thereby align themselves more closely with certain groups of people who represent their target audience.

I very well agree to mirage and CE. Marketing is not plainly something as promoting your products and/or services. Good marketing is all about letting your target market know "what is in it for them". It is all about "benefits". And benefits will last not only for short period of time but for the long run because people will look at your products and services as important for them. And this is where "branding" will come in. If you have achieved good marketing of your products and services, people will start to trust you and will become your loyal customers, thus, achieving long term marketing.

Hi, perhaps you can try Google adwords to market your service/product.
Google adwords is a text-based system for advertising on its site and its partner sites. The service allows you to create your own ads, choose keywords to help match your ads to your audience, and control the cost of your advertising—you pay only when people click on your ad (a cost per click plan). Anyone wishing to promote a product on Google can enroll in this program.
you can get a 5 detail pages information about Google adwords at :

Marketing is a whole of the following six functions:
- identify the needs of a maket
- design a product that satisfies those need
- fix a price for the product considering your cost and other factors
- communicate with them that you have designed a product to satisfy their need
- make the product available at places from where they can purchase it
- provide after-sales service
