The original Arawak or Taino people from South America first settled on the island between 1000 and 400 BC. Although some claim they became virtually extinct following contact with Europeans, others claim that some survived.
Jamaica was claimed for Spain after Christopher Columbus first landed there in 1494. Columbus used it as his family's private estate. The British Admiral William Penn (father of William Penn of Pennsylvania) and General Venables seized the island in 1655.

History books written by Europeans and Caucasians claim that Christopher Columbus discovered Jamaica as they claimed he discovered many other countries!
The real fact of his 'discovery' is that he shipwrecked and ended up on the shore of Jamaica where he was met by the natives of Jamaica who gave him food and shelter. Now ask yourself this question, how could Christopher Columbus discover an Island that was already inhabited?
His 'discovery' was no different than the English pirates and terrorists that accidentally landed at Plymouth Rock after running out of food and water. They were met by native Americans who fed and sheltered them and in return the English terrorists murdered and raped the natives then staked claim to their land....... and Wa La.....America was founded! Thanksgiving was derived from the turkey meals the native Indians fed the English terrorists when they were near death from starvation. So remember everytime thanksgiving is celebrated it is giving thanks to the native Indians not the English terrorists!

Christopher Columbus discovered Jamaica, but about a couple of centuries later, the British settled there bringing people they had kidnapped from the west coast of Africa to put to physical slave labor.

"I'm taking my g/f to The West Indies"
"Jamaica?"
"No she wants to go"
I'm reading a book at the moment about how the Chinese discovered the Americas in 1421, long time before a certain Italian, will have to see if Jamaica was one place they landed.

Anyone BUT Christopher Columbus. My guess would be the Muffin Man who lives on Dewsbury Lane.
