When will you numpties understand that we do not, will not, have not live(d) in a police state?!!! A police state is when the government directly control the police. I.e. They can fire any commissioner/ CC/ officer. This puts ministers above the law because the police wont arrest them for fear of losing their jobs. The only person above the law is the Queen. Fact is that the government dont control the police. The Chief Constable controls the police in their area (or in Londons case the Commisioner). The Government cannot fire any member of the police. The CC can fire officers, and a CC can only be fired by the IPCC (Independant Police Complaints Commision)

And Yea, ASBOs are seemingly fairly pointless, but if an ASBO is broken (the flaw is that the person has to be caught again) then they are tried for Contempt of Court which is a serious offense and though i'm unsure on sentencing, i think minimum is 5-7 years. Idea is obviously to keep as many people out of prison as possible because 1. They're pretty full 2. IT costs too much; They're not supporting themselves (though in fairness most asbos dont anyway) not paying tax etc but getting meals and tvs etc provided for them. 3. If its not a serious offense the worry is that socialising with people that have commited serious offenses will turn the person into a re offender and maybe doing more serious crimes.

I think the court should have the power to strip a criminal of their assets to pay for their time in prison.

Can't comment on ridiculous asbo's as I don't know details of any. But I will put another angle to you regarding a police state, (which I don't think we live in anyway). People that become the subject of an ASBO might well be thankful that we have laws, order, the police, because if we didn't, those ASBO holders would be dealt with by ordinary law abiding honest sociable people,........ that wouldn't waste time with the kid glove approach! :-)

Firstly I think you have a serious misunderstanding about asbo's. Anti social behaviour orders, can be issued by the courts and the local authorities. They are needed to maintain law and order for the vast majority of tenants who are decent, living on large estates where gangs are likely to create havoc.

By havoc I mean offences against property, excessive noise, littering, vandelism, and threatening behaviour towards law abiding citizens.

We do not have a police state, we do not have sufficient police personnel to warrant that assessment in terms of numbers. On rare occassions when people have been shot it has been an accident and as a response to a) prevention of terrorism or b) prevention of a criminal offence continuing to cause injury. The police do not exercise the upper hand unless they need to.

If asbo's is your main concern, mine is that they do not do enough, to deter disturbing behaviour for long. People who commit offences need serious punishment not little slaps on the back, only when punishment fits the crime will the decent citizens on large sprawling estates see peace.

An ASBO is just a soft punishment to try and con the community that the police are doing something about anti-social behaviour.

Well, maybe an ASBO + sterilisation would work better?
