They originally were black due to the slate that was used. Now we just continue to call them that regardless of the color. I have even seen red. It's just a name that stuck.

The early versions were black and provided good contrast to the white chalk. However, better materials were used and green color was more pleasant to the eye and did not compromise the constrast much.
Some schools have swung to the other extreme of using Whiteboard instead of Blackboard. So they have progressed from Black to Green to White and then later to just Powerpoint presentation.

Hey, I'm old enough that when I went to school they were still black. And, still, the most terrible sound in the word is that of nails or some object screeching across the board.

because the majority of paints covering the boards, that you use chalk to write on , is black .
Although after a while they turn green , but you can also get the green painted ones too

initially there have been the black boards. inspite of the undeniable fact that my college went by using an entire political correctness area some years back and that they now call them 'chalk boards' however the White board remains called the White Board...

They used to be black. They use a matte paint color on them that's non-abrasive to the eyes. Some are still black, even.
