Dream dictionaries and other peoples' idea of what your mind is trying to tell you isn't going to help.
How do you feel about snakes?
What do they mean to you?
For example, I have also had a lot of snake dreams, but I LOVE snakes. And if my dream has me laying in a mossy glen in a pile of boas and other snakes, it's probably going to be a nice dream. But for you, that's terrifying.
It could be something as simple as a snake phobia, but I would guess not considering how long this has gone on.
My advice? Write down the word "snake" on top of a page of paper and then write every word that comes to mind underneath. Keep writing until there's no more room on the paper. Once you've done that, put it away for a while.
When you come back to it, chances are, some words will "jump out" at you and help you understand what the snakes represent to you and what your dream is trying to say.

snakes in some areas represent a change - snakes shed their skins. I would say that there is a change in you life that you are afraid of, or since this dream was with you since you were a child i would say that there was a very large change in you life that you had a hard time accepting, (will not or cannot accept).
You need to find out what changes happened, it may not seem that bad now, but at the time of the change your sub conscience seen is as a rather large change. You must find out what that change was and if you cannot accept it at least acknowledge it, face it. Your sub conscience will not let it go hence the continuation of the dreams.
Find the real problem and there you will find the solution

Seriously, it could be that the snake represents a phallus, penis, or authoritative male figure that you just can't get rid of. Perhaps you are having trouble controlling or learning about your own sexuality? Snakes can also (from a Biblical perspective) represent just that, but also temptation and evil. From a pagan perspective, it would also represent the male organ, but could mean your alignment in things, or your natural counterpart in a less hectic world.
Try to remember what you are doing in the dream when the snake is present. How does it make you feel?

Snakes do represent healing and healthcare, also transformation and rebirth (they shed their skins again and again) and were very abundant in goddess myth and and culture, the beloved serpent. It had NOTHING to do with evil, although it does represent power, the wise use of it (such as in healing).
I think the most important thing is understanding what it might mean for you is exploring what snakes represent to YOU though because its your dream and your unconscious speaking to you. May be connected with these collective and ancient meanings, and yet more likely it has something to do with your early or primal associations with it. Since it brings up fear - what are you afraid of? Are you afriad of your power? How do you feel in your dreams, what are you doing? Are you always afriad? Do you ever feel comfortable with the snake? Are you comfortable with your fear?
Theres a lot of ways to work with your dreams but I think the most important is honoring what symbols, experiences, associations etc in your dreams might mean to you personally rather than what other people think of them.

Mom used to say she had frequent dreams about snakes. She had a cheap dream book from the drugstore that said snakes mean enemies. She said she always beat the snakes in her dreams. I told her that Freud said snakes in dreams are phallic symbols, so her dreams show she is "hung up" about sex from her puritanical upbringing and thinks one should fight sexual desires. Her oldest sister died a virgin at age 84. Her father was a Baptist pastor, and her mother was nuts from her strict beliefs. Mom never said she dreamed about snakes again. Jung said snakes are guides trying to help us achieve a higher level of consciousness. Take your pick! I choose none of the above. I don't think dreams mean anything to the waking mind. They are on a different level of consciousness.

Snakes are symbolic of different things. Snakes are often seen as symbols of life, death and rebirth. In North American native tribes, the shedding of the snake's skin is associated with life and a new beginning.
In writing about Snake Symbolism, Gillian Holloway, Ph.D. wrote, "People who are dying or who have lost a loved one often dream of snakes, at or near the time of death. For whatever reason, these dreams seem involved with the psychic awareness of the transition from this life to the next....
Snakes are also seen as symbols representing evil. The bible uses the symbol of the serpent in the Garden of Eden to represent Satan. In other cases the snakes is seen as a phallic symbol.
You will have to look at your dream in its entire context and determine how you felt about the snakes in the dream. You should also look at the other associations in the dream.
But you know..I have seen snakes in my dreams too, and still I dont believe in this bullshit :p

Seeing snakes in your dreams in many interpretations stand for sex. You are not comfortable with your sexual urges but it is something you are not realizing it, that's why it is in your dreams. Once you come to terms with it your dreams should change. You were bit by a snakes means it is something that is effecting you physically but still don't recognize it. But a lot of dreams contain metaphors of sex because it is a natural be very taboo situation.
