A prime number is an integer that cannot be written as a product of anything except itself and 1. For example:

5 is prime
6 is not prime (since 6 = 2*3)

All other integers are called composite. There is a well-known theorem (called the 'prime factorization theorem' or the 'prime decomposition theorem' ) which says that *all* composite numbers may be written as a product of prime numbers (with replications if needed) and that this 'factorization' is unique for each different composite number. (That is, except for order, each composite number only factors in one way) For example:

105 = 3*5*7 ( = 3*7*5 = 5*3*7 etc.)
64 = 2*2*2*2*2*2

'Common factors' are any factors that two composite numbers have in common. For example:

105 = 3*5*7
154 = 2*11*7

have the common factor of 7.

And I'm outta here for a few minutes to run up to the corner 7/11 and get come ciggies
