I seem to have good reception, but can't get through when making calls, particularly in big cities. Currently on T-mobile, with a basic Nokia phone.

I'd get a new phone and change network. T-mobile still have the worst coverage in my experience. Nokia are still one of the best phones for signal strength. The only phones i've had problems with are Sony Ericsson. Every one i have had has poor signal strength (on Vodafone, orange & o2). The last model I had was W800i and this was exactly the same. I'd be out with my mates who were also on o2 and they'd have 2 to 3 bars signal on their phone, where I'd have sos only. This seems to be common in most models of theirs going by friends, forums & personal experience.
If you're after a 2G phone, the Samsung D900 looks one of the best at the moment. 3G - Samsung Z400 & Nokia N73 are both good phones.
As for networks, I've had contracts with Orange,Vodafone & o2. Coverage for these are pretty much the same although Vodafone is the most expensive.
I'm currently on '3' and have no problems what so ever despite everyone seeming to slag them off. I have a Nokia 6280 which is great on 3. I have no problems with bad coverage. At the end of the day when you're out of 3G service area you swithch to o2 network which is fine. There are still some models which keep switching between 2g & 3G areas causing loss of signal, but most of the newer models are fine.
The thing with 3 is that people compare to their experience of 2G networks and not for example o2 or Orange's 3G network.
Personally I'd go for any of the networks except T-mobile as in my experience they all offer good service / coverage.
My wife is on T-mobile on Flext 35 which is brilliant value.
Only thing is the signal fluctuates terribly even though we live bout 300m away form the nearest T-mobile mast !

I've always been on T-Mobile & only ever had Nokias. Is it a contract or pay as you go?

I don't know why I ask that, because my answer is going to be the same - new phone. It would just be cheaper to change if you were on a contract.

It is difficult to get through in the big cities are mor epeople have mobiles there, therefore less network coverage.

Good luck :-)

Network & phone. I have the same problem with T-Mobile (Virgin). Nokias are said to be the best phones but u may need to upgrade.

Last time I checked T-Mobile has reception is like 48 out of the top 100 cities. Verizon, Cingular, and Sprint would almost double your reception they have reception in 98 of the top 100 citites.

Change you service.
