I'm not sure I understand what you've said (or where you are) but there are usually three wires (USA); hot, neutral, ground. Hot is black, neutral is white, and ground is usually not insulated. With a light fixture, it really won't make any difference how you connect the hot and neutral. Ground should be to ground.

If there are multiple wires coming from the box and you don't know which is which, the only way to figure out what goes where is to put a tester on the wires checking for hot/neutral/ground. You can get a very cheap tester for a couple dollars at the home stores. Connect all the hot wires back together, all the neutrals, and all the grounds.

Hope this helps.

The first answer has one point which is very bad. The hot and neutral are NOT interchangeable! The neutral is grounded and is connected to the screw shell of the lampholders. If you switch them you will have a hot wire connected to the screw shell and have a shock hazard.

If you just removed the connections for an old light, you shouldn't have all 3 cables with no connections to each other. Maybe you aren't describing the situation fully. I would say you need an electrician to figure it out.

At the risk of sounding like a smart ***, which I`m not, you should call an electrician. You`re going to have a problem identifying switch legs and hot legs and neutrals if you don`t know what you`re doing. An electrician will be qualified to do that with out the risk of you getting fried.

I just installed a couple of cieling fans and they each had a loop on them, but it had nothing to do with the wires. You were suppossed to hang the fan by the loop so that you don't have to hold it up there while connecting the wires.
