It is because of French colonialism Vietnam was divided; and the Americans unified them with communism taking the south as well. Anyway they are well off now, than what they were before.

Well, the US got involved in vietnam to help out the french. Then, as you know, we got our butts kicked in vietnam (but not before doing some serious damage), and we got the hell outta dodge. Since then, they've been under communist rule. So there you go, the communist government currently in power in vietnam is due to french colonialism.
