fuel pump is going out, which is why you need to pump it, after sitting it loses pressure and needs pumped back up, also might be the accelerator pump on the carb, and if you pump too much you will flood the truck, so thats probably why it wouldn't start after mulitple attemps, symptom is very strong fuel odor.

Well its a proccess of elimination.I allways change plugs etc and do an oil and filter change when i buy a secondhand car.But dont overlook the fuel situation, you could have a bit of dirt foating around in the float chamber of your carburrettor. It lodges itself in the seat area, and prevents fuel from getting to the plugs, then when it stops running sometimes it drops away again and you can get fuel again until it does it again..Undo the screws and drain the float chamber.Clean the area first, and dont allow any dirt to get in there. Also check or replace the fuel filter as a partialy blocked filter will do this.check the air filter as a dirty air filter will allow small particles of dirt to enter the carby.Check for air leaks at the carby base--if it is sucking air, this will cause the symptoms you describe also-tighten the bolts down if loose.--Good luck.
