Then don't try to get ahead. Find a new job you enjoy and do it instead.
Personally, I used to work in the IT (Information Technology) industry doing everything from desktop/server support to network management and computer programming. Despite the fact that they were nice enough to limit me to a 40-hr work week (salaried position, so no over-time anyway), they still worked me into the ground. I also felt the job was unethical -- I felt like a pawn for the computer industry by promoting the sales of computers with a planned obsolescence period of 2-4 years. I was locking my employer into a computer & software replacement cycle they couldn't afford and trying to meet impossible expectations on a limited budget. Not only that, but constantly buying and replacing computers is horribly wasteful and not environmentally friendly. And I rarely got a raise (above the cost of living increases) during the first 6 years of employment. In fact, two years I go no raise at all because of a "tight budget." (Upper management got 6-10% raises, though, of course.)
So when I got sick of it, I quit. I decided that I've always enjoyed studying and working with animals, so I found a school that helps train you to become a zoo keeper and/or animal trainer, and now I'm going back to school. I've decided I'd rather be happy with my work and poor rather than fairly well off financially and miserable with my work. It's also an environmental, social, and economic statement for me.
Unfortunately, I realize that this kind of change in income isn't an option for everyone. Some people have families to support. However, the question I leave for you is this: How much of the money you spend in your daily life could be saved by living more frugally? If you didn't buy extra clothes, extra food, waste gas, waste energy, etc., etc., how much would you save? Could you afford to take a lower-paying job for the sake of enjoying your work, even with a family in tow? Food for thought....

It saddens me to hear your story because I was in the same position years back. My first opinion would be to look for another job....perhaps one where someone you know works and is happy. I know that probably is impossible. I would assume if you had such an opportunity, you would have grabbed it by now though. My second opinion is stick with it and not take things personal. I realize that this is also pretty hard to do, but you must place your well being first. I know the misery at work must affect your home life too. Try to ignore the selfishness, money centered executives. When they are bit-c-in, let your mind escape to another place! Far away from work!!
Good Luck and Best Wishes to You!

yea, no sh-t !, they only now look forward to the next quarter, s hort term only, no long range business plan because some 22 yr old a$$hole on Wall st. told them that they would make $ doing this, and if it's not profitable for the stock holders, they (your bosses) get their pp smacked at the next stock holders meeting. The stock holders get angry when they have to drive last year's model Mercedes, my heart bleeds. I wanted this job at a utility for years, I finally busted in on the big money. I worked rotating shifts, weekends, every Christmas day, and heres the capper: Forced O.T. if the guy bailed out on the shift following yours. I hated the job so much, then I would get forced another 8 hrs doing very hard l laborious work. The Job paid very well but everyone was so tired and irritated most of the time that fights would often break out (yea, the "I'll punch you in the mouth kind, I was involved in 3 of them). The place depended on the state to check out the people (Drivers lic. was the only real background check). I found that people had slipped through the cracks of this place that had been in prison's and mental institutions (For Real) some had to go back. The Job sucked, I felt like a prisoner for 10 years, I finally got so sick of it that I really went looking for another job hard. I found almost the same job with a bit less money but, 9-5 with week ends and holidays off. I'm much happier now, the other place was run by NAZI's, still is, so glad that I busted out ! I used to see my old boss now and then, and would instantly give him the middle finger. Once I was crossing a street and saw him, and I walked up the hood of his car, over the roof, and down the trunk, he used to be really mean, now he just chuckled, why ?, cause he knew that all that mouthing off to me now ment nothing cause there is a very good chance that he is going to get his *** kicked from me. I took great pleasure in doing this, I usually don't do stuff like that but This a$$hole had it coming ! move on, save your sanity, they just keep pushing and pushing, resist, bang in sick on Mon and fri, look for another job, then make them crazy by doing things like coming in late leaving early double lunch, many breaks, etc

1st ?: you have no skills and are incredibly unmotivated. if i am wrong, you wouldn't be complaining on here, you'd be happily working in your dream job until you retire.
2nd ?: doing good things for employees (raises, perks, vacation time, promotions) cost employers money. firing employees and delegating duties to other employees is very cost efficient. if they had quality employees maybe they would care more, but trust me, they ARE making money by not caring about you peons.
3rd ?: explosive powder does seem like a threatening form of revenge, doesn't it? has anyone tried it yet? if not, then they have no reason to expect it.
4th ?: no one likes office jobs. find out what you like to do. go to college if necessary. apply everywhere and pick the place you like best, not the place that pays best. if you are lucky enough for those two to be the same place, cheers to you.
5th ?: it's possible, but not likely if you continue to be pessimistic and let people walk all over you. ever hear of toastmasters? this and other similar programs can help you build confidence and gain valuable people skills. it will make you a more attractive candidate for future jobs. whenever i had a crappy job or one where my boss was nasty to me, i made the best of it. if you pretend to be happy, you will trick yourself into being happy. if you work hard and do your job well, your boss will be happy. happy people are nice to be around.
6th ?: college, determination, using time wisely
problem with being your own boss/starting your own business is if it fails, you lose your investment. really helps if you have a unique/necessary product and business management skills.
justanotherengine, i understand your bitterness, but i must inform you that you speak pure garbage. get a leg to stand on, maybe people will respect what you say. it is not always "their" fault, it is just that "they" are easy to blame because you don't have to name names and you can accuse them of all kinds of nonsense.
i love my job, i'm sick of whiners. fix your own problems. no one else owes it to you.

There are choices to a negative work environment! Since 2001 I have been working with laid off workers to determine what is next and better for them than what they were doing prior. Our volunteers have helped thousands find happy employment, creating a foundation for more career successes, with a model to get there-- the answer is not in the size of the company, but finding a complimentary environment. We work alot of hours on our job, it is nice if we can enjoy that time a little bit.

that's big business for you. why do you think there were so many worker's rights demonstrations after the industrial revolution? it sounds to me like you need to find a job in a smaller company that can still offer comparable benefits. if your all about the money, then this is all stuff that you will have to deal with.
i can't stand people like that and i know i would never make it in a large company. i work for a small university, they offer great benefits and i can go to school if i want for 5% of the cost. i love the environment because everyone knows you and they actually care.

The problem here is that the younger generation has become lazy, they dont like to work any and they have terrible work ethics, they complain about to much and how hard they have it, there weak minded parents have raised them to believe that everything should be handed to them on a silver platter, and they shouldnt have to work hard to get anywhere in life, ergo making them weak minded themselves, life is hard, deal with it.
>> What a crock of bs. The real problem is the older generation wasn't smart enough to save jack sh@t and now they're hogging up all the high level positions. There is no room for advancement. All the high paying jobs are taken by individuals who have been in their position for 20+ years. Most of your parents retired around 55 or 60 unless they owned their own business and wanted to work more. The baby boomers think they know everything. I have worked for corporate businesses, I scored almost perfect on all my evaluations I've ever received. I've never been reprimanded, yet I never got promoted. I'm almost thirty now, and it's still near impossible to pay all my bills because employers allow ya'll to stick around fearing the reprocussions of ridding themselves of an aging workforce. I'm not saying you didn't work hard, but don't question our work ethics. I went two months without a day off putting in seventy hours a week just to lose my job to a baby boomer a month later because he was a friend of the boss. I was taught how to work by my grandfather and could run circles round you physically, so don't preach to us about work ethic. We have to work two jobs just to survive. You probably have a plush corner office and a three day work schedule...
America needs to wake up and give us a shot and stop holding us down.
PS I left corporate America... I now DJ for a strip club and it can be good money .... it's hit or miss.... unless you get a big club. You can make money then. The trick is to let the baby boomers have Corporate America, and we need to start the businesses of tomorrow. They've lost vision. They think status quo is good enough and economically we're getting left behind by countries like Japan. We need a new economic revolution... it's got to start with us. Not just internet either... we need to start engineering and manufacturing stuff that's new to the world

The answer is education...but not structured "higher" education. They only train you how to work for someone else. Run as fast as you can to buy Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiosaki.
Basically there are 4 ways to create cash flow: Employee, Self-Employed, Business Owner, and Invester. You need to transition out of the Employee and into one or more of the other 3.

You have to identify the root of the problem. If you mention that every job you have does it mean every job you have been employed in or just this one company? If it is just this one company, then maybe you want to do what Phoenix has mentioned and if things still do not work out, then move on. However if it happens to you all the time, you need to idetify the root of the problem, maybe sometimes the problem lies in you.

It sounds as if you need an attitude adjustment. You can get ahead by giving your best effort and volunteering to do chores above and beyond what the job calls for. It could lead to a promotion and more money.
