Surprisingly, bushes like Azaleas are considered evergreen too, as they hold their leaves through winter.

In general evergreens like acidic soils, and the fertilizers recommended for them tend toward acidity.

Evergreens are good wind shelter plantings for north and east facings of the house.

Deciduous trees and shrubs are good for south and west facings, since their leaves provide shade to the house in summer (keeping the house cooler), yet fall off and allow sunshine to hit the house in winter (providing free warmth).

Evergreen trees are tress maintaining leaves throughout the year. Pines, Magnolias, Live Oaks, Furs etc hold their color & leaves throughout the year.

Deciduous trees go through a cycle of leaf drop and dormancy providing a change in appearance. Sycamore, Maple, Red Oak, Cottonwood, White Oak.

It's not very complicated. :) I'm sure you're already familiar with both. Evergreen trees are things like pine trees or arborvites...anything that keeps it's leaves all year long, typically trees with needles. Deciduous trees are those trees that lose their leaves during the fall and winter seasons and grow new ones in the Spring. (i.e. Oaks, Maples, Ash, etc....)

A deciduouu tree or bush drops it's leaves in the Fall in cold climates; An evergreen tree does not drop it's needles. Evergreen tress are like spruce or pine or juniper. Deciuous trees need to drop their leaves in order to set leaf bud for the next year.
