With search on yahoo/google etc there is "information overload" particularly when one does not have enough idea about the field. So, its better to ask question to "living" people and when you get an answer from one who knows better and can answer then the search on google/yahoo or wikipedia can be more directed.
Infact, I use it for this purpose only. I mean when I've some idea can search on net but when the field I have to search (say genetic engineering or medical science) is bizzare for me I will first ask that to the community and ask on yahoo too :) later on will decide how to use this info in conjunction with the info available on net through Google or Yahoo.
In my opinion, Yahoo started this service to call it collective intellegence and knowledge sharing of the whole world. Good idea! And hope people will understand it and over a period of time answer to questions will be more directed and serious so that the questioner gets what he/she wants/wanted to know.
Keep questioning and answering to the questions you are sure of.

Three possible reasons... Listed in order of likliness...
1. Idiocy: These people honestly don't understand how to use a search engine, an online encyclopedia, a regular one, what have you. They want an answer, and they don't know how to get it except by asking and letting those who know how to type their question into Google take the credit for you.
2. Laziness: Do the search yourself? Find your own answers? Psh! Picking through search engine results or looking it up is too hard! So rather than actually putting effort into the answer, they have others do it for them. It makes life easier and they don't have to think. Thinking causes WRINKLES, after all!
3. Genuine Curiosity for Best Answer: Some people have done the research, knowingly, and don't have a good answer, or they want a better/more complete answer. So they post it on here, and cross their fingers in the hopes of finding someone that isn't rushing ahead just because the good answer is going to be buried with point-gaming idiocy (as mine will end up being likely) or doesn't know what the hells they're even talking about.
You can get a lot of good experience on here... It's just that it's 1 and 2 the majority of the time. This is why I pick and choose my questions.

It basically is because of 3 reasons: -
1. They do not have time for searching it and get instant replies on yahoo! answers.
2. Individul research remains individual but when you ask a question on yahoo! answers, it becomes a source of education for all those looking for same kind of information. At times, I am here to answer some thing but see an interesting topic in the shape of a question and read the answers to get better educated on it.
3. As these answers come from real people, they approach a given question from different angles thus their personal experiences also add up in their answers. No research can provide yoy that kind of feed back.

This question of yours is a very good example to explain why!
How would you expect to find any answer for it on google or wikipedia?
Mind boggling? Well, you asked for it!

The reasons I've found are either people aren't sure of a search term or they're asking questions of a personal nature that wouldn't be answered by Google or Wikipedia.

Those are the dumb questions. Wasting a question that is easy to find on Google like "How many people are in the world?"
But other questions you want people's opinion on...that's what Yahoo! Answers is good for.

Sometimes there is just not enough knowledge on google, for instance I was looking for craft wholesalers, I trawled google and found nothing relevant so I asked on here instead, people with experience gave me good answers and pointed me in different directions!
It's ike having the best of both worlds!

Maybe they want many different opinions, or are asking a question that cannot be found on wikipedia. Or maybe they don't understand the definitions on google or wikipedia.

I dont get it either. About 90% of the questions I read people could have gotten the answer themselves if they just did a little research
