DO NOT GET A GXS-R600! If you do, there is a very good chance that you will die.
From your description, the Suzuki SV650 sounds PERFECT! It's a naked sportbike, has a 645cc V-twin motor, is very easy and fun to ride, and is under $6000 spanking new. For a couple hundred more, you can get the "S" model, which has a slightly more aggressive riding position and adds a half fairing.
They're liquid cooled, and from 2003 all SV650's are fuel injected. You simply push the button and it runs, every time, every day. Search eBay or Craigslist, and you should be able to find a good used one nearby.

The usual crew hasn't answered yet, so I'll jump in with the Suzuki SV650. I THINK it's a Suzuki - someone will correct me if I'm wrong. I know nothing about this bike, but I've seen it recommended before. I've actually seen one in person as well, and it does indeed look like a sport bike, but it's not so radically structured.
And then there are the Ninjas - the 250 and the 500. I personally wouldn't bother with a 250. The 500 would probably be ok.
I believe Kawi also came out with a 650 Ninja which is probably similar to the Suzuki.
Finally, although I wouldn't highly recommend doing this, it is possible to put handlebar risers on just about any bike. I purchased Convertibars for my ZX6R. While I don't have the full range of motion they show on their website, it did raise the bars up enough for me to be comfortable. But I'm only 5'3; most people wouldn't need to do this.

I'd recommend going to a dealer and sitting on a couple bikes yourself. Comfort depends a lot on the individual. The good news is that most of the sportbikes in that size range have a rather upright posture. I've found that I have no trouble sitting bolt upright on a Ninja 250, for example.

NO sport bike is comfortable, they all have you hunched over gas tank, and putting your weight on to your hands and wrists. After a few minutes it gets really uncomfortable.
Yamaha, Honda, and Kawasaki make some great bikes, go to the dealers and sit on them all, find one that suits you. Don't just take someone elses word for what will work for you. Find the one you like the best and has the comfort level you want.
Don't buy any Suzukis! My brother and I bought 2 new bikes for a summer vacation. His 1200 Bandit leaked gas and ruined the motor before it got 2000 miles. We asked Suzuki to replace the motor so we could go on vacation.
It took 2 months to get a rep, then he said it’s to expensive and would cost $3000. After 4 months and the vacation gone they got the motor rebuilt at a their cost of $3700. The dealer wanted to replace the motor but Suzuki Rep squashed that.
The gas stained cases and burnt exhaust pipes were not replaced. The bike got nicked and scratched all over from being apart for 6 months. The rep rode it and looked at it, then said it’ good as new. It ran like crap and looked worse.
We called Japan, and even wrote the US CEO all for nothing. We spent $15,000 for the bikes to get ripped off by Suzuki. We spent our vacation hassling with Suzuki, and not one person there gave a damn!
Beware Suzuki’s warranty is not worth the paper it’s on! Buy one of their lemons, get shafted, we did!
I’m a 30 yr garage vet and I know when a rep and a manufacturer have ripped off a customer. This one stinks to high heaven! RUN from buying any Suzuki!
