i did this once at a local flea market stall. i bought a used cell and they called verizon and ported it to my number. seems to be a thing of the past because i 've tried to do the same thing recently, and nobody does it anymore. they want to sell you a calling plan. ideas?

I would call Verizon directly. If you go into the store or into one of their authorized dealers, nobody wants to activate your used phone because thier not going to make any money off it. The salespeople get paid commission. However, if you call in and tell them the serial number located underneath the phones battery, they will do it.

The only reason they won't do it is if the phone is stolen or something like that. Or if the phone is really old. Any phone made within the last two years should be activatable. It's against the law for them to activate really old phones, because really old phones aren't GPS compatible.

If you have an other phone at home but you had a different provider you can find an unlock code for it. You would just have to switch the sim card into the other phone... that could get you through the time being at least if you broke your current one... cell phone companies are all a bunch of theives

I'm not in Toronto, but you should cancel it and report it lost. If he does end up finding it then you can reactivate it. I lost my phone a few times and canceled it to be safe.
