There are many species of "plecostomus" type fish. The main ones found in petstores are generally either Hypostomus plecostomus or Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps. These catfish can get quite large (depending on species, from 12-24" long). They do not clean the tank water. When younger these fish are good at cleaning the algae from your tank glass. However, they don't like all sorts of algae. They will not eat 'poop' as some people think.

There are numerous species of fish can clean the tank and 'suck'. Plecos are only one type and there are dozens of species of plecos.
