Actually, most all hobbies are useful, at least to relax and rejuvenate the person enjoying them. But many are about making things, and that's useful. And many are about collecting things, which is really a form of investing. That's useful, too. Also, they are often things which parents and kids can do together, which is good for both.

The other thing that is especially overlooked at times is that almost any hobby can be turned into a career. If you like to collect things, you can become a dealer and sell to other collectors. The knowledge you have about what you buy and sell is the "value added" that makes a profit. If you like to make things, you might get good enough at it to make a real profit selling what you make. But you might also make money selling tools and supplies and instruction books to other hobbyists. You can often make money setting up shows and exhibits, and organizing activities for other hobbyists. For example, there is a fashion lately for cruise ships and tours to be booked with a special theme, such as quilters or doll makers, and the tour planners and guides make a salary and/or a profit doing the tours.

my frnd the best and the cheapest hobby for anybody is reading.. 1. You gain knowledge, literacy and lot other stuff..Well if you are thinking about music .. it costs you money and believe me its just waist of time.. IF you buy a novel and read i am telling you will imagine yourself in the story as the finish the book... And things like what we are doing right now ... we can do this too,..... typing and all that .. the reason i am here in this session is that right now i aint got no job and after getting one forget about i am busy as hell.

Useful hobbies are those that serve a purpose, whether making money, relieving stress or just passing time constructively.
