In 1980 my mother made $20.00 an hour,U.S as an RN....I have been told by RNs in a previous question that they start out at $22.00 and hour. HOW CAN THAT BE CONSIDERED AN INCREASE WITH THE COST OF LIVING?

Because nursing leadership, especially Dr. Patty Hawking, misled an entire generation of nurses to believe that it would be "unprofessional" to unionize.

Why doesn't any working class person make much more than they did 25 years ago?

...that should be the question.

Fact is, salaries haven't gone up much, if at all, in 25 years, while C.E.O compensation went from 300 times the average worker's salary to 500 times the average worker's salary.

Union membership has been on decline since the 1950's.

Something like 10 to 15 percent of all workers are in labor unions.

That's dropped from about 50%.

The decline in labor is the reason why big corporations get bigger all the time, utilizing technology where labor was once needed.

I don't know if RNs were affected as much as the rest of working people.

They should consider themselves lucky. Most people would about kill to get the pay they had in the 1970s working at auto manufacturers and steel plants int his country making $20-$30 an hour. Now they are forced to work for $10 an hour or less because they aren't skilled in a high demand occupation anymore.

I would think if you looked you will see that it has gone up greatly with the cost of living, the demand and the increased knowledge they need to deal with in this modern medical world. Not that I do not think they deserve it as they do. I think they deserve more.

How about reading a little before you make such a statement. Most jobs have gone up in pay at lease some. 25 years is a long time. Please get a clue.

Even the worst jobs have gone up a little.

They don't. That's why many of them choose not to join a union, because they're so in demand they don't have to.
