Well you could do the Lucy Van Pelt approach and wear a costume you think is the opposite of your character. I went as a Boston fern one year and won first place. However I usually go as a fictional characters I like, Trillian from the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy or Maid Marian. Think of who you would like to be and go for it.
