I often think about this. I think about the music kids listen to now-a-days and I think it just can't compare to what I listened to growing up.
But if you're asking about the actual network programming. Even though they don't show as much music and the percentage of rock music (crappy or otherwise) has serious declined, I do like watching road rules/real world challenges.
Still that's not enough to compensate for not being what it once was. I used to really look forward to the music awards during the 90s. Now it's just pathetic.
Back to my earlier thoughts though. I know lots of kids in their mid-teens will think they had a great era. I myself think my high school era (mid/late 90s) was great. Yeah, I'm sure the 60s, 70s, even 30s were interesting. However, I'm really glad the music that is popular now, wasn't popular when I was in school.
I know that I'm biased so I'd really like to listen to some of the younger people's answers.

the old mtv like the 80s and the early 90s because they acually played good music, now they just play really bad music. the only thing good thing about the new mtv was jackass, viva la bam, and the wildboys but they took those off so mtv sucks now

I like both because I still watch it. I grew up with MTV and its a shame to be so old and still watch it, but I do.

I can't stand reality TV.
If it's reality and unscripted, why do they need writers?
MTV should go back to the way it was and show music videos.

old was better. it was creative, new and different... it had "Yo MTV Raps". Now its all pop and they play the same crap over and over. I do like some of the shows though... like Pimp My Ride & Cribs
