because they are supposed to be machines but are alive. they are robots but in a different sense, unlike the usual portrayal of robots. These ones transform and exhibit humanlike emotions and attitudes so therefore people can and will relate to them and the conflicts they experience.

When you think about it, it's kinda like a sci-fi movie. somewhat too bizarre yet enjoyable to (ever) be true. =)

it may also be because it has a great storyline. (i'm referring to the old or original version or series of the cartoon.) yep, really great storyline. every episode is an adventure we rarely saw back then. (well i guess even now coz for me nothing else compares to the Transformers. i kinda like to think it's in a genre all it's own.)
