I have worked off and on, for 31 years, as a hairstylist.
Licensed in 6 States.

I've had other jobs as well. Some, included Hospice Aide, Certified Nurses Aide, Home Health Aide, Office Cleaner, Offset Printing, adult oriented jobs (phones- cashier at a private club, which was a lot of fun), traditional call center jobs and some awful temp assignments in offices I hated.

I am old now.
I am not crazy about doing hair but continue for the $$$.
It is nice to work in a place where the music is on all day and people laugh and joke all day while working.
But, physically, I am in pain from the job. Too many aches and pains... and no insurance.
I need to find something else to do, that will allow me wear casual or casual professional clothes.
Not be in an office.
Preferably evenings.
Both sitting and standing.
Pay no less than what I make now..
School or licensure, it would have a short course.
Maybe involve travel.
Insurance coverage.

Any suggestions?

although not evenings, teaching could be a good job for you.

Pros: Hard as hell to get fired, in serious demand, short work year, benefits, deal with kids most of the day, not all that difficult, pretty relaxed if you let it be, lotsa holidays.

cons: pay isnt the greatest, deal with kids most of the day, teaching isnt for everyone, does require some schooling.

I don't know what you get now in pay, but I'm pleased with working in a call center. Pay ranges here in Sacramento from about twelve to around sixteen an hour, plus benefits, and it's a lot easier than being on your feet styling hair all day. Training on proprietary software is paid and one to three years customer service background is generally required, though some jobs are entry level.

You might want to check out http://www.spherion.com or, for example, http://www.caremark.com.

I work for Caremark, and I like the atmosphere here. In customer service we're also not tied to a script or call times. Service is everything.

Hi Viola,
I have been self-employed with a reputable company in it's 6th year of business. I work 3-4 hours a day which allows me the flexibility to do other things that I like, as well as being able to be sitting and standing as needed. I travel 5X a year with my company and I am surrounded by some really great, upbeat people who love to have fun at work, and in their spare time. With the amount of money I make, I am able to pay for my medical expenses out of pocket. If you would like to know more, feel free to contact me.
