The best way is to watch as much football as possible and call out the formations befor the play starts. As well as recognizing the plays as they happen . So, when you get a chance let him watch college and NFL games and make it a game where he must recognize the formation and wether the play is run or pass as soon as possible as its happening. In a sense your breaking down film for him which is fundamental to every football players' career.

The NCAA and NFL designed video games will be good. He'll have to pay attention to the LB moves in those games. In real life though, keep him interested in the game and let him progress at his own pace. The best way he can learn at that level is to watch the guards feet at the snap. 99 times out of 100 they will tip the play by pulling in the direction that the play is going. If they drop back into a "cup" or "umbrella" looking stance, they're most likely pass blocking. In short, have him read the backfield formation first, the read the OG feet AT THE SNAP. He'll have to have an explosive first move so that if he runs the wrong way, he'll still be able to adjust and strafe down the line of scrimmage after the other OG and help make the tackle.

Well, at that age most kids are into video games so maybe you can let him play video games. He will be able to see the many different formations out there. Also by watching as much football as he can on tv, and also maybe going to the local high scholl games. I played football my entire life, but when i was that age I learned better by making the game more fun to me, which was indeed playing video games. Your son will come around it just takes time, so don't what ever you do pressure him to the breaking point. If you make the game seem no fun to him anymore he may stop playing so just choose the direction that you think will get his attention the most and flow with it.

11 is still young. just keep him interested in the game. if he is having fun, then he will learn a lot faster. i completely agree with the people that have said make it a game. have him call out the plays etc. one tip though: don't use too many rewards with what he does. children will often loose interest and simply do something for the extrinsic (outside interest) reward instead of the intrinsic (self).

You should research the formations unless you already know them then use X's on paper then set up some cones then you could pads. Then watch football games and have him identify the offensive formation

He is only 11 years old, just give him some time. Do not try to force it down his throat or it will not be fun for him - therefore counter-productive.

The Madden video game idea was pretty good I thought.
