You need to make sure that they have the same pin number. Go to each respective website and look up the computer models in order to find out what kind of RAM is in them. This will be a number like 168, 72, so on. If you'd mentioned the two models of the computers, it could have been looked up. It depends on the age, make, and quality of the computer. You will also need to make sure it is the right type as far as SIMM and DIMM. That will also be listed on the website's model specifications.

Go to http://www.pcmech.com/show/memory/87/ and
http://www.hardwarecentral.com/hardwarecentral/reports/article.php/12093_3580456_1 and learn more about properly installing RAM. Good luck!

There is a specific slot for every memory

Check if they are the same memory type,

ex SDRAM, PC400, DDR2

If you take out the ram and put it to another, if its fit in, it might work

different memory has different slot for them, no two incompatible RAM have the same slot

You can, if your Gateway's RAM is from a card. Otherwise, you can't import the internal RAM from a Gateway to a Dell. However, if it's a removable RAM upgrade card, yes, you can.
