Perhaps the universe seems to expand because everything in it is getting smaller.

The question is meaningless, since it implies that there is something outside the universe into which it could expand. But the universe means "everything": it encompasses all that there is, so there is nothing "outside" it. The analogy with the expansion of a balloon has often been used: as you inflate it, it gets bigger, but a two-dimensional bug living on the surface does not recognize an inside or an outside: its universe is expanding, though unbounded.

I have a feeling that the universe itself, as we know it, is expanding into the stuff of what existed "pre-big bang". Now if we only had the knowledge, and technology to explore that far out into the cosmos...

We always search for something that is away from us.
Like us I think the whole universe has a life and soul.
That is why it is expanding in search of something.

I think the universe will expand for certain period and then will start shrinking till it will go back to the big bang period.

Its expanding into nonexistance. Not like a vaccuum, not like emptiness, but true nonexistance. Therefore its not expanding into anything, its just expanding.
