The question is meaningless, since it implies that there is something outside the universe into which it could expand. But the universe means "everything": it encompasses all that there is, so there is nothing "outside" it. The analogy with the expansion of a balloon has often been used: as you inflate it, it gets bigger, but a two-dimensional bug living on the surface does not recognize an inside or an outside: its universe is expanding, though unbounded.

I have a feeling that the universe itself, as we know it, is expanding into the stuff of what existed "pre-big bang". Now if we only had the knowledge, and technology to explore that far out into the cosmos...

Its expanding into nonexistance. Not like a vaccuum, not like emptiness, but true nonexistance. Therefore its not expanding into anything, its just expanding.
