Yes of course, except for the Windows XP files.

I had that same question when I upgraded my mac from nine to ten. The files stayed, and it upgraded fine. But there's always the chance that they won't stay, because your computer is different. I would suggest backing up your hard drive before you upgrade just in case. We did, even though we found out after the fact that we didn't need to. This also helps if you ever have further problems with your computer. You'll still have your files from that time if it becomes corrupted or something and things start disappearing. A few missing is better than quite a lot missing. Use CDs (or DVDs) to save your files. I'm not sure if Vista will be backwards compatible like OS X was for awhile in that it allowed for a seperate boot of the old OS. But with competition fierce between macs and pcs, I would say it'd be a safe bet that they would. So if you have any that you bought that aren't going to come with your new operating system, back them up just in case. I'm not totally sure about upgrading a windows, as I don't use one, but I'm pretty sure it would work about the same. Be on the safe side, back up your files, and upgrade from there.

Always back up data files before an upgrade. No matter what the OS is. Things go wrong in upgrades with the best OSs. Moving to an experimental OS like Vista you are very likely to have problems.
Installed apps, those will be hit and miss. The tradition with Windoze has been you need to rebuy almost everything between versions.
A rule that helps Windoze users is to NEVER install an OS until the second service pack is out. If it is not an OS but from Microsoft wait until at least the first service pack is out for it before even trying it.

It really does depend on what version of Windows XP you currently have. According to the Microsoft Website, if you have Windows XP Home Edition, you can upgrade to any version of Windows Vista when it becomes availible without losing your settings and files.
If you have Windows XP Professional Edition, you can only upgrade to Windows Vista Business or Windows Vista Ultimate without losing all your files.
If you have Windows XP Media Center Edition 05, you can upgrade to Windows Vista Home Premium and Windows Vista Ultimate without losing your files and settings.

In my humble opinion , I'd say chuck the motherboard , ram and CPU. If you get an FM socket motherboard ( 50 - 80 bucks ) , 4 gigs of decent DDR3 RAM ( EBAY , 30 bucks or so ) lastly , get exactly this ; AMD A10-7850K . It is an APU rather than a CPU. In other words it has a radeon 7850 graphics card built inside basically speaking. It will not only RUN Battlefield 4 , it comes with it for free on NEWEGG. google it. you tube it , it will play ANY game out there. Intel's version of an APU is their i7 4770 , and it cannot compete with even an AMD A8. in fact , the i7 combined with an nvidia 630 graphics card still cant touch it. more good news , upgrades are easy with AMD , they are always forward and backward compatible. Good luck with your decision , and may you own like a boss in BF4 :-)

When upgrading, and the key word is upgrading, you will not lose your files, just the xp system files. I would back up all of your personal files prior to commencing with an upgrade, just to be safe.
If you install and new operating system then the hard drive will be reformatted and you will lose all of your personal files.
