Movies come out on Thursdays.

The releases for major label music is set for Tuesdays in order to allow distribution. If the music is shipped on (for example) Wednesday, then it might reach some stores by Friday, others by Saturday. If there is a problem, and the shipment is delayed, it would be more difficult to correct the problem over a weekend. Also, the solution is not going to be instantaneous, so Monday is also not good.

I have heard several example of one store selling a release on Monday, which generally gets the other retailers so pissed off that they call the distributor and complain. In one case, Target was selling a release, and Sam Goofy was doing the complaining.
