Wow, japanese.

I myself have made a couple of folding screens before, which are really simple to make. They are much simpler to make than the sliding dividers, but if you want that, it wouldn't be much more trouble.

You could take measurements of the amount of space you need to divide, and figure out how many panels you'll need to make to cover that space. If it's a sliding one, just make divide that space in two and add about an inch or two on each side for overlap. If it's a folding one, you would divide it by the number of panels you need, and adding one or more panels should accomodate for the angle you need to set it up with to stand.

For the frames, you can either buy raw wood or go to an art store and by canvas stretchers which will fit together to make the size you need. Raw wood will be cheaper. I drilled holes and glued dowels to raw wood to hold them together. I think I might have also staple gunned the edges together where they met. You can also cut the edges to meet at 45 degrees the way most frames seem to be made, but that's more aesthetic than functional.

Then you'll either need hinges or a bit of track that the thickness of the frames will slide in and out of. You'll probably need four, one for each door to slide the length of the distance to be divided and for both ceiling and floor.

Linked below is a simple fabric covered folding screen project and an installation guide for folding and sliding doors.

I made a room divider with plywood. I made narrow shelves the complete height and length. I stained it to match my decor, and used it as a place to set up framed pictures. This really turned out well, because it added to my wall space and I was able to display pictures I had no other room for.

i know exactly what your talking about I'm actually about to make one for myself. I'm going to buy some wood of my choice in color, width and thickness at the lumber yard, build three frames like door frames kinda, about 6 feet tall and 6 hinges to fit them together with. depending on the with and size of the framing lumber you choose the hinge size will vary so ask an associate at the lumber yard to help you find the one best for you. then I'm going to build a cross design in the middle to brace and stabilize my frames and use fan shaped molding corners to accent which are also at the lumber yard. I'm going to use either small screws or framing nails which are small to hold everything together. for my covers I'm buying a oriental designed fabric which i found at wal-mart, i would build the frame then take measurements and tell the associate at wal-mart the size so as to get enough yards of your fabric of choice. I'm going to use a fabric glue to secure my fabric to the back of my frames and wha-la. that's how i plan to build mine anyways hope it helped you in some way. good luck.

You need a very skilled finishing carpenter to do it with a lot of experience in wood work, But if you are going to do it yourself, please buy a book DIY for wooden dividers.

buy the wooden sticks and measured them to the height you want, then paint them, put them together, and buy a screen or fabric, staple it, and there you have it. I'm making one for my girlfriend she wants one too, not Japanese Which I'm glad that's more work for me. Good luck!
