The Vernal Equinox usually falls around March 21, and this is typically said to be the first day of spring. In fact, it is simply a date on which the night and day are approximately equal in length, and which is halfway between the Winter Solstice (shortest day of the year) and Summer Solstice (longest day of the year).

People's actual experience of spring is very different. I live in Hawaii, where spring is essentially baseball season, and the time when you don't get quite as much rain as you did in the winter.

For someone in Michigan, spring may be the first day you see a robin (which migrates south for the winter and flies back north for the summer), or the first time you see crocus blossoms pushing up through the snow.

Spring is going to be a very different experience for people in Tennessee or Alabama, who typically see snow only about three days out of the year and see robins all winter long. These folks may realize spring is here when they see yellow blooms on a forsythia bush in someone's yard, or purple blooms on redbud trees along the highway.

All of these things may happen before March 21, but that doesn't mean there's no more snow and ice in the weather forecast. And you may still have to scrape frost off your windshield in the morning.

There are nearly 300 million people in the US. While many of them know that the official first day of spring is the Vernal Equinox, the beginning of spring may yet have a different meaning to each one of them.

According to my calendar, Spring begins on March 20, not 21, I have no idea where some people get the 21 as the first day of Spring.

In the USA, spring season begins on March 21st with the Vernal Equinox. Just for your knowledge, summer begins on June 21st, autumn begins on September 21st and winter begins on December 21st
