With the commencing of the world cup in 1930, the original trophy was indeed a cup.
Named after the World Cups founder Jules Rimet it was in circulation until the 1970 World Cup.

FIFA gave permission for Brazil to keep the cup as they has been world champions on 3 seperate occasions.
For the tournament in West Germany 1974 a new "cup" was commisioned

FIFA decided against changing the name of the tournament from World Cup to World Trophy as for the previous 34 years the world had come to recognise this tournament as the World Cup.....It is only 2nd to the Olympics as the biggest sporting event in the world.

G'day Claude S. Africa,

Thanks for your question.

The World Cup has never looked like a cup but has been a name similar to the FA Cup. From 1930 to 1970, the Jules Rimet Trophy was awarded to the Cup winner. It was originally simply known as the World Cup or Coupe du Monde, but in 1946 it was renamed after the FIFA president who set up the first tournament. In 1970, Brazil's third victory in the tournament entitled them to keep the trophy permanently. However, the trophy was stolen in 1983, and has never been recovered.

After 1970, a new trophy, known as the FIFA World Cup Trophy, was designed. This is not awarded to the winning nation permanently, irrespective of how many World Cups they win. Argentina, Germany (as West Germany), Italy and Brazil have all won the second trophy twice. It will not be retired until the name plaque has been entirely filled with the names of winning nations in 2038.

The new trophy is 36 cm high, made of solid (fully gold) 18-carat gold and weighs 10.97 kilogrammes. The base contains two layers of semi-precious malachite while the bottom side of the Trophy bears the engraved year and name of each FIFA World Cup winner since 1974.

World Cup winners retain it until the next tournament and are awarded a gold-plated replica rather than the solid gold original.

I enclose more sources for your information.

Regards

The original world cup was known as Cup Rimet, named after Jules Rimet. The Cup had to be won 3 times before any country could take permanent possion.

Brazil won it. Cup Rimet, which was made out of gold (I believe it weighted 7 lbs), was eventually stolen and smelted.

Slightly picky. What is the difference between cup and trophy. the World Cup is the World Cup, giving them a statue, does not change it.

That is the way it is. It is not really a cup but trophy, cup, statue. What's the difference? You lift them up when you win.
