The Constitution of India says that Hindi shall be the Official Language of the country and that English was allowed to continue for 15 years, as the official language. As the 15 years time limit, was to expire, the people in TN became restive. They did not want Hindi to become the official language. Hence, the agitation spearheaded by the DMK, which was still a nascent regional party. The agitation was total, something comparable to the students' movement in Assam in 1980's. Some of the ardent agitationists resorted to self-immolation and died. Although, the Official Languages Act, pursuant to the Constitutional provision, referred to above, was enacted, when Lal Bahadur Shastri was the PM, subsequently when Indira Gandhi became PM, an assurance was given that as long as the people, wished English would continue to remain an official language. The Official Languages Rules, framed, under the OLAct, has exempted the State of TN, from the purview of the Rules, framed for the purpose of implementation of the Act.

A historical fallout of the movement, is that the DMK party came to power in the State of TN riding on the crest of this movement, which had all the elements of a popular movement, spearheaded by the educated youth of the State.

though i am not aware of the full thing i i will try my best.

the central government insisted all the states to have name boards in hindi and school education language as hindi. the politicians like karunanidhi and anna opposed it. mr karunanidhi ,i suppose, lied on the railway tracks and so he was arrested. They opposed hindi because they were against the central government and that was because the ruling party in the center and state was the congress. these people(karunanidhi and anna) started the dravidian party and want to create something so that they can get the power the next time and they founded this problem .
