If you want to understand the US legal system, but not for practicing in the US. An LLM degree program is what your looking for.

JD programs are for students planning to practice law in the US.
Of these prorams there are two main categories,
ABA approved and non-ABA approved programs.

If you get accepted into an ABA approved program then you will be allowed to practice anywhere in the US, assuming you pass the bar.
If you go to a non- ABA approved program you may be allowed to practice in that state upon passage of the bar, but not elsewhere in the US.
