Not on an otherwise stock engine if the computer is working correctly. Of course, that's two big cavaets right there.

If you have to pass a visual smog check (instead of just a sniffer test), and want more horsepower, I would suggest either upgrading it to TPI or an LT1 swap. Both would require a different computer.

If not, you can improve the horsepower if you make some more upgrades besides removing the computer. You *must* replace the carburetor and distributor anyway if you are removing the computer. Add a performance cam, a dual plane aftermarket intake manifold, some tubular headers, and a free-flowing dual exhaust. Maybe do a bit of work to the cylinder heads too. A package like that could probably add around 100 hp to that stock 160 hp rating if you chose the parts reasonably well.

But just removing the computer itself is not going to help very much. If you want power, it's only the first step.

No. and it would be illegal, as the computer is considered an emissions component. If you remove it and further modify your car to run without it, it will fail your emissions test. You can't any more remove that than you can your Catalytic converter or EGR valve.

if you are after better peformance instead of removing computor system try installing a trick chip, available at all perfomance shops
keep the old one as you will need it to pass emissions if required
