Because it makes them feel important.
They can do any bad thing they want, and the rest of the gang applauds them for it. It validates their bad behavior.

When you are poor, uneducated, violent, etc. - who is going to want you around except for other deviants like you!

I feel its because most teens want to feel a part of something maybe their parents cant afford to pay for things they want so they try to earn money by doing gang related crimes. Also maybe because parents may not give them the attention they have always wanted so in a gang you have a group of people who share your same views in life and who have been through the same so you feel comfortable around them and feel its the right thing. Plus they have a leader figure to follow and they are working towards something in the gang. So they feel that they have some kind of meaning when really in a gang their is no real such thing as loyalty because they will turn on you in a second if their life was on the line just as you would. Plus many teens are brainwashed by gang members or they grew up around gangs or had family members involved and nobody told them what was right so they wanted to experiance it and before they realize it was a bad idea its too late because most gangs you cant leave or you will probably get killed or put in prison eventually.

Some teens don't have anyone who cares if they live or die...When they join a gang...They feel like they finally belong somewhere and that they gang are their best friends...And they end up doing anything to be wanted and to stay in their gang...

Gangs are substitute families for many teens. They offer acceptance and even love for teens who might have seen very little of either.

Poverty helps fuel gangs, but broken families are far more the source of the problem.

I'm in no gang, however a gang may offer a way to socialize and to feel part of something that maybe is not available within ones family...

Because many times being in a gang is a lot safer than not being in a gang.

tyron,

all of us, people, need a feeling of being accepted. for example, people who feel like they are being neglected by their family often go to their peers who, they think, can understand them better and accept them.

it is also true with teens who join gangs. they wanted to be accepted in a community, and feels that they could be better if they have many friends, bad or good.

but even though we don't want to be aloof, we do not want our good habit be spoiled by bad association. and often, teens do bad things, not because they want them, but because they are pressured by their gangs.

I'm in no gang, but I think they join because they want to learn social skills, but it's no doubt that in most cases they deal with alcohol and/or drugs.
