Goldfish grow too large to be kept in a bowl for any length of time. It's like the equivalent of a human living in a walk-in closet. They can grow to be 12" and weigh over a pound, sometimes much more, and so should be kept in at least a 10-gallon aquarium. Any fish under 3" and over two years old is severely stunted. They can live to be 20 years old in an aquarium, but perhaps only weeks in a bowl. They also do not do well alone and should have at least one other fish with them, preferably another goldfish or rubber-lipped pleco. Now, there are good fish for bowls, which are white cloud minnows, rosy red minnows, paradise fish, and bettas. Aside from these, very very few fish can live in such small quarters.

I had a goldfish, a Shubunkin, that lived for 10 years and grew to be 10 inches in length (counting his fins, they were pretty long) He started out at 2 inches. He lived in a 10 gallon tank all his life, and I wonder if he would have gotten bigger in a larger tank. Goldfish can live for a long time if their water is kept clean and I have also heard that the tank size limits their growth. I think 3 months is a bit too short to expect any big changes in growth, but he's probably slowly growing.

I don't know much about fancy goldfish, but I can tell you a thing or two about comet (also known as common or feeder) goldfish.
When taken care of properly (in at least a 20g for the first fish and then 10g per additional fish), a goldfish can get to about a foot length possibly more. They can also live for about 20 years.
For those who say they won't outgrow the size of the tank, they are sadly mistaken. Sure, the body won't grow any more, but the organs continue to grow inside. Can you imagine that?
I've had Speckles for 9 years now and he is almost 9". I need to get a pond for him so he can continue to grow and thrive. That will be a sad day for me as he is my baby.

The goldfish (Carassius auratus auratus) was one of the earliest fish to be domesticated, and is still one of the most commonly kept aquarium fish. A relatively small member of the carp family (which also includes the koi carp and the crucian carp), the goldfish is a domesticated version of a dark-gray/olive/brown carp native to east Asia (first domesticated in China[citation needed]) that was introduced to Europe in the late 17th century. The mutation that gave rise to the goldfish is also known from other cyprinid species, such as common carp and tench.
Goldfish may grow to a maximum length of 23 inches (59 cm) and a maximum weight of 9.9 pounds (4.5 kg), although this is rare; most individual goldfish grow to under half this size. In optimal conditions, goldfish may live more than 20 years (the world record is 49 years); however, most household goldfish generally only live six to eight years.
If you look more at this site there's a ton of info to help you find out how big your fish will get.

It all depends on the size of your tank, the bigger the tank the larger the fish will get, if it is in an outside pond then it could grow up to a foot long if you measure from head to end of the tailfin

Most typical goldfish don't live long enough for them to outgrow anything, and will only grow slightly during the time you'll have it. That is, unless you have a carp. They can be hard to tell apart from goldfish, and live almost as long as parrots.
