ray, now might be the time to get a paper route or start mowing some lawns, you're not going to find a 600MHZ processor, not new atleast you can mow lawns for the rest of the summer and have enough money to build yourself a new lower end PC with a 2.2GHZ celeron processor and about a gig of ram (computer might cost you 500-600 bucks USD)

good luck in your search and your lawn mowing little man.

PS. if you overclock it like the idiot above said you won't have a computer to upgrade after a week or two.

I Really dont think so that you can upgrade your computer from 400MHz to 600MHz. Because your motherboard might only support 400MMHz and not more, i presume thats the reason why your computer did not even start when you changed the processor. The best thing is check if your motherboard supports and if not you will have to change your motherboard or the chipset.

Nothing, by the time you invest in a processor you might as well have bought a mobo and started over. The problem here is that 600 mhz processor availability isnt very hi so you would pay a premium to get one. A wiser choice is to but a mobo processor combo. You can purchase a combo for as little as 100 bucks. Even cheaper is to go with a barebone. A simple 3 ghz barebone can cost as little as 150 bucks. Lastly, you arent going to see much difference in system operation bumping your processor speed up 200 mhz.

This all depends on what the motherboard's specifications entail. Because of how old your computer is, I seriously doubt Dell will do much for this and, if they do, it probably would be cheaper for you to buy another machine. If you're trying to get buy without spending too much money for a new machine, my suggestion would be for you to install the maximum amount of RAM your system can hold. Because of how cheap most systems are nowadays, the process of upgrading your CPU to 200 more megahertz would probably be cost-prohibitive. While answering your question, I just did a search on ebay for a machine in the range of 1.0 GHz to 1.9GHz and a large majority of them were going for around $100 which is incredibly cheap and more than twice as fast as the one you possess currently.

As far as I can think of, a 400MHz processor is a different socket size than a 600MHz processor. You would need a whole new mother board that supports a socket 370 processor (providing that that is the socket size for a 600MHz processor) and a new processor.

Both are too slow. Go for 2.70 GHz because it help alot. You should buy new computer because you can't upgrade your CPU speed.
