I feel like an idiot asking this question, but how are there still trades being made after the trade deadline?

The trade deadline has come and gone, but trades can still be made, though players must clear waivers first. How does the process work? The Globe's Gordon Edes gives us a quick primer on the waivers process:

You're going to hear of many players put on waivers between now and the end of August. If a player clears waivers, that is, doesn't get claimed by any team, he can be traded to any team. If he gets claimed by one team, he can only be traded to the team that claimed him. If he gets claimed by more than one team, he goes to the team with the worst record in his league that claimed him, and can only be traded to that team. If he's claimed by teams in the other league, he goes to the team with the worst record, and can only be traded to that team. Of course, not trading the player remains an option. He can be pulled back from waivers once in August. If he is placed on waivers again before September, he can't be recalled a second time. Or, if a team is just hoping to dump a player's salary, it can simply allow a team that claimed that player to have him for a small waiver fee.

you know what? Someone else was asking that question too, so you're not alone. I don't know anything about the trade deadline and any trades still taking place though. Sorry.

As long as a player clears waivers, and is not claimed, he can be traded. If more than one team claim him, the team with the worst record gets him!

If a team is interested in trading to get new players to help give them some depth for the post season, they have until August 31st for the traded guy to be eligable for post season play.

ok, if a player clears waivers (every team is offered the player, and usually his hefty contract too, but the other team gets nothing in return), then they can trade him away. before the deadline, they can trade players and get players in return.

They waive a player then are forced to trade him to the team that claims him.

they could have been made before the deadline, but details where yet to be resolved so they were not made public.
This is maddening to some extent.

that could be confusing. well people makes rules and then they don't follow it. then there are rules for one, same rule doesn't apply to another. there are exceptions, and there are.... plenty of other stuff that really gives us headaches, and... and... ah, i forgot, i'm confused too..
